“Go back to the cemetery , goth girl”
fleur de lis
a short film about flowers, death and trolleys
Left in charge of her family's florist shop, a meeting with a stranger takes Flora on a journey through the night to confront a loss in her life.
This was hard to make. It was my first short film in five years, and without the production outfit freezedriedham I used to be part of. I had nothing except a script and some hard-wrought storyboards. The idea was to ask lots of favours of people to act in and shoot the film. I threw myself into doing as much as possible - directing, making props, recording the music.
The council said we couldn’t film in the town centre. We did it anyway - my dad came down, it was a fun evening. We shot in a graveyard, a hairdressers, a florists. I was so scared to ask if we could shoot there my sister had to make the call - the owner let us have the run of the place.
It took about 4 years to get the film made, and i’m sure I gave up on it a few times. I was so grateful to everyone for going with it. It reminds me: make something with whatever you have around you, and ask for help - people are brilliant.
