“Detectors of Bumble and Nitsy’s quality rarely wait around to be proven right or wrong; they move on to detectoring the way a cloud looks a bit like Gibraltar, or what Chinese food might be called in China”

The Thinking Man’s Trumpet

a book about a musical mind control device

Semi-retired after solving the murder of Penelope Loveslice, Detectors Bumble and Nitsy find themselves drawn into a fresh mystery: a killing and the apparent reappearance of a powerful enemy that place the pair on the trail to find a stolen musical mind control device before reality itself is nobbled.

I decided I did not want to die without having a book that had my name on its spine. It would be so cool. Phoebe, an artist and friend, was up for creating illustrations for the words I already had. The story was one I wrote for a girlfriend years ago, and always liked it enough to want to share it more widely.

We launched a crowdfunding campaign and got the support of people who wanted to see our book become a reality. The focus and encouragement came along at a good time for me, with things in life going awry. Getting the proof copy of the book was so exciting! Having an excuse to hang out with Phoebe and package up all of the books to go out to our backers was a good time.

One person told us their boyfriend picked up their copy and started to read again for the first time in years. That’s amazing! We made a thing. It’s wonderful to make a thing.

Brought to life in the words of Paul Macauley and through the illustrations of Phoebe Munson, this is a witty, warm and bonkers trip into a world where everything ordinary and extraordinary alike is as fundamentally connected and wondrous as you know it really is.
